Native Maps

This work is connected to American landscape and the Black/Afro-Indigenous people the land historically. Using the archetypes of tribal images (masks) and maps to visually connect the past to the present to create a sense of timelessness and transcend the main stream ‘African American’ timeline. The media used here is a collage of printed U.S. maps, graphite, charcoal, oil and kaolin clay; these are traditional and non-traditional materials to grab the viewers’ attention and pull them in to follow the visual story. The technique of using printed/found material, stencils and heavy-handed marks create visual depth. These materials are also intended to feel like they were gathered from the natural environment to become something that is aesthetically beautiful and in someway functional.
